Framework for Implementing Access Technology

Front cover of Early Learning Access Technology FrameworkThe Early Learning Access Technology Framework (Knight, 2014) provides a systematic approach to teaching children the skills necessary to implement technology.

The Framework uses a child-centred approach and focuses on providing learning experiences that ensure learning how to use technology should be “enjoyable, meaningful and motivating” (Knight, 2014, p.3).  It documents the skills and knowledge for technology for students with vision impairment, divided into seven themes:

  1. Explore and Communicate
  2. Listen, understand and Respond
  3. Keyboard Awareness and Use
  4. Tablet Devices
  5. Braille Experience
  6. Navigation by Mouse
  7. I Can See It! – Customisation for Low Vision

Teaching tips and ideas are provided, along with checklists to assess and track the progress of the students.

This document is available from the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children.
