Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a technology that enables the print to be scanned into a device and then converted into a searchable, editable document. Once the document in this format it can be converted to speech, enlarged print or braille output. This is different to Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) that enlarge the image only. OCR actually converts an image into text. For more information, read this current blogspot from Vision Australia.
OCR devices, can come as standalone or devices that connect to the computer. Standalone machines are usually portable and do not connect to a computer to convert information. Connective devices plug into to a computer and can transfer images to electronic format either by software on the device, or software on the computer.
