Input Devices

Input devices enable people with vision impairments to access print (Kelley, 2006). These include dictaphones, braille machines and  closed circuit televisions (CCTV). Click on each category to be taken to product information and reviews.

Visual input devices:

Visual input devices allow standard print to be scanned and the printed information is converted  to a digital format. The technology that enables access to printed information is called optical character recognition (OCR).  The text can then be read by a screen reader or converted to braille (Kelley, 2006).

Speech input devices:

Speech input devices record spoken information and store information for later retrieval and/or enable it to be emailed to other users.  eg dictaphone, Smart pen and iPhone

Tactile input devices:

Tactile input devices , such as braille machines can be connected to the computer. The user enters information through the braille keyboard and and connect to a computer to transfer braille to digital print or speech output.  Some computers allow the QWERTY keyboard to be used as a braille input device through use of SDF and JKL keys.
